  • Based on data from women aged 50+ years diagnosed with breast cancer between January 2019 and 31 July 2020, this report reviews diagnoses and treatment patterns across England and Wales, taking the early months of the pandemic into consideration. Outcomes among women diagnosed between January 2014 and December 2018 were also examined within the report.

  • This short report looks at early onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC), which is defined as a diagnosis of colorectal cancer under the age of 50 years. The incidence of EOCRC appears to be increasing rapidly, and the reasons for this trend are poorly understood. This report therefore compares patient data for those under 50 years with older patients, where both groups were diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer between 01 April 2013 and 31 March 2018 in England.

  • According to this model of demand and demand variations for magnetic resonance-linac (MR-linac) it could service 16% of England's fraction burden. The variations in simulated demand of the MR-linac highlight the requirement to use local-level data when planning to introduce a new technology.

Includes survival charts 0-14yrs, 15-24 years and 0-24 years.

  • Analysis of data on primary liver cancers diagnosed during 1997–2017 obtained from population-based, nationwide registries in the UK indicates that incidence and mortality rates have rapidly increased between 1997 and 2014 (rate of increase has plateaued since around 2014); hepatocellular carcinoma incidence and mortality rates were highest in Scottish men; survival has improved, particularly for hepatocellular carcinoma, but remains poor.

National Prostate Cancer Audit Annual Report

  • 52,580 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in England and Wales between 1 April 2018 and 31 March 2019. The number of men diagnosed rose quite significantly in the diagnosis period compared to the previous year: by 23% in both England (40,429 to 49,804) and Wales (2,239 to 2,776). This is a larger year-on-year increase than seen previously and might be explained by media coverage of two high-profile individuals with prostate cancer in 2018.

This report describes the care received by patients diagnosed between April 2016 and March 2018 and their outcomes.

Cancer Quality of Life Survey

Cancer Quality of Life Survey 
  • A national survey run by NHS England in partnership with the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS) based at Public Health England (PHE).
  • From 2020, people in England who have had a breast, prostate or colorectal (bowel) cancer diagnosis are being asked to complete the survey around 18 months after diagnosis.
  • Results of the survey will be available from 2021 and will be published on the ‘Cancer Data’ website (https://www.cancerdata.nhs.uk/ ).

  • Background mortality risks for 24 cancers with and without COVID-19-relevant comorbidities were obtained from population-based primary care cohort (Clinical Practice Research Datalink) on 3 862 012 adults in England. Dramatic reductions were detected in the demand for, and supply of, cancer services which have not fully recovered with lockdown easing. These may contribute, over a 1-year time horizon, to substantial excess mortality among people with cancer and multimorbidity.

  • The 'Cancer 62 Day Patient Target List' (CANPTL62) collection is a weekly snapshot which shows the number of patients on the cancer 62-day pathway, who are at risk of breaching the 62-day standard (two month/62-day wait from urgent GP referral to first definitive treatment). From the 23 November 2020, this collection has been remodelled to also include waiting list breakdown by suspected tumour groups 62-day screening, consultant upgrades and further granularity about the start of treatment.

  • Comparisons of clinical practice guidelines and patterns of care across seven high-income countries (Norway, Australia, Denmark, Canada, UK and new Zealand) suggest international variations in ovarian cancer treatment. Characteristics relating to countries with higher stage-specific survival included higher reported rates of primary surgery; willingness to undertake extensive/ultra-radical procedures; greater access to high-cost drugs; and auditing.

  • Cancer survival statistics for adults and children by stage at diagnosis and by different geographical variations.
  • Main points
    • Melanoma of the skin had the highest age-standardised net survival for 1-year in both males (97.6%) and females (98.8%) and for 5-year in males (90.1%) and females (94.5%) for diagnoses between 2014 and 2018.
    • Pancreatic cancer had the lowest age-standardised net survival for 1-year in males (25.3%) and females (26.6%), and for 5-year in females (8.2%) for diagnoses between 2014 and 2018. For males, the lowest 5-year survival is in mesothelioma cancer (6.7%).
    • We provide survival by stage estimates for 23 cancer sites. Stage data is complete for 86.8% of diagnoses in 2014 to 2018.
    • Childhood cancer survival has continued to improve for 1-, 5- and 10-years, with the 5-year survival seeing the greatest improvement over time; an increase of 7.4 percentage points, from 77.2% in 2001 to 84.6% predicted for children diagnosed in 2019.
    • For Cancer Alliances (CAs), the difference between the minimum and maximum 1-year survival estimates varies from 1.5 percentage points for breast cancer (females only) to 13.1 percentage points for brain cancer (all persons).

  • Analysis of 34 studies of the association of cancer treatment delay and mortality concludes that "even a four week delay of cancer treatment is associated with increased mortality across surgical, systemic treatment, and radiotherapy indications for seven cancers."

  • This short report examines geographical variation in the management of high-risk or locally advanced prostate cancer in England, explores determinants for receipt of treatment, establishes between-hospital variation and investigates possible reasons for this variation.
  • The latest figures from the National Prostate Cancer Audit (NPCA) show that in 2017-18 over 47,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in England and that 41% had high risk or locally advanced disease. Approximately one third of men with high-risk or locally advanced prostate cancer do not receive radical surgery or radiotherapy treatment in England and Wales. Many factors are implicated in this potential ‘under-treatment’ but little is known about the between-hospital variation.
