• This short report looks at early onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC), which is defined as a diagnosis of colorectal cancer under the age of 50 years. The incidence of EOCRC appears to be increasing rapidly, and the reasons for this trend are poorly understood. This report therefore compares patient data for those under 50 years with older patients, where both groups were diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer between 01 April 2013 and 31 March 2018 in England.

• patients who had carotid endarterectomy, and
• patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) who had either lower limb revascularisation (endovascular / bypass surgery) or major amputation.

• 52,580 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in England and Wales between 1 April 2018 and 31 March 2019. The number of men diagnosed rose quite significantly in the diagnosis period compared to the previous year: by 23% in both England (40,429 to 49,804) and Wales (2,239 to 2,776). This is a larger year-on-year increase than seen previously and might be explained by media coverage of two high-profile individuals with prostate cancer in 2018.

• The audit focuses on monitoring activity levels and outcomes following congenital cardiovascular procedures at any age, and for patients under 16 years of age with acquired heart disease who undergo interventions, as well as the success of antenatal diagnostic screening. 
• The audit collected and analysed data from all centres undertaking congenital cardiac surgery, interventional procedures (including electrophysiology) and antenatal detection in the UK and Republic of Ireland between 2016 to 2019.

This report aims to understand the reasons for the differences in cases captured in the two datasets National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS) and the National Bowel Cancer Audit (NBOCA) data. And to determine whether NCRAS data can be routinely linked to audit data to improve case ascertainment in audit reporting.

• Patients are defined as approaching the ‘end of life’ when they are identified as being likely to die within 12 months. Concerns have been raised about the variation in the quality of end of life care received by patients, with several reports highlighting poor care. This short report aimed to look at patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer who were at the ‘end of life’.
• As expected, patients who did not live for more than a year from diagnosis tended to be older, have metastases, have poorer performance status, and to undergo no surgical procedure. 
• However, what was not known was that these patients had, on average, two hospital admissions with a length of stay of 18 days each and that a third spent over a month of their last year in hospital. 
• 86% of those who lived for less than one year had at least one emergency hospital admission and, if  that admission was in their last month, nearly two thirds died in hospital.
• Of concern, patients with higher levels of deprivation appear to be more likely to die within 12 months of diagnosis, despite adjustment for other factors. This suggests that there may be some inequalities in access to colorectal cancer care services.
