National Vascular Registry 2021 Short Report on COVID-19

  • This short report on COVID-19 is an update following the report published by NVR in November 2020. It presents results on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on provision of NHS vascular care in the UK, and its potential impact on short-term surgical outcomes. The analysis covered:
    • patients who had a repair procedure for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)
    • patients who had carotid endarterectomy, and
    • patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) who had either lower limb revascularisation (endovascular / bypass surgery) or major amputation.

  • This report provides information on emergency and elective vascular procedures for the period 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2019 for following patient groups:
    • Patients who have a repair procedure for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
    • Patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) who undergo either
    • (a) lower limb angioplasty/stent,
    • (b) lower limb bypass surgery, or
    • (c) lower limb amputation
    • Patients who undergo carotid endarterectomy or carotid stenting abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and patients who undergo carotid endarterectomy or carotid stenting.

National Congenital Heart Disease Audits

  • The audit focuses on monitoring activity levels and outcomes following congenital cardiovascular procedures at any age, and for patients under 16 years of age with acquired heart disease who undergo interventions, as well as the success of antenatal diagnostic screening. 
  • The audit collected and analysed data from all centres undertaking congenital cardiac surgery, interventional procedures (including electrophysiology) and antenatal detection in the UK and Republic of Ireland between 2016 to 2019.

Future commissioning arrangements for congenital heart disease

  • Recommendations around future CHD services:
    • North-West CHD Network - Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (level 1 adult CHD services) with Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (level 2 adult CHD services)
    • University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (level 1 CHD services with conditions)
    • Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust’s (level 1 services with conditions)
    • Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust ( level 1 CHD services until at least March 2021, with further consideration around advanced heart failure and transplant service and its level 1 CHD service)
    • Ceasing to commission level 2 CHD services, including cardiology interventions in adults with CHD, from Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, and University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust.
