  • This is a synopsis of the third and final report on the provision of specialist rehabilitation following major trauma.The report found that access to specialist rehabilitation appears limited and needs much closer attention paid to the implementation of the standards that already exist.
  • Recommendations for commissioners include, regular review of processes and referral pathway, opportunities for development of specialist rehabilitation capacity, both for inpatient and community-based services and review of standards.

  • The Symbitron project - started in the Netherlands in 2013 and involving an international project team from Switzerland, Italy, Iceland and the UK - has been working to restore partial movement in those with spinal cord injury. 
  • It has done this by designing a unique wearable, assistive exoskeleton that helps to activate the neuromuscular system, which is believed to improve motor recovery. Inspired by how the body itself works, this safe, personalised man-machine interface is responsive to both the user and the environment.

  • Sleep positioning systems are often prescribed as part of a 24-hour postural management programme. for children and adults with neurodisabilities. A review of the literature identified 14 studies of sleep positioning systems. All were small and most were of low quality. While no harm was found, inferences of benefits cannot be made from the literature.
  • The results of this review will inform a new evidence based guide for therapists prescribing sleep positioning systems for patients with neurodisabilities. It is hoped that this guide will help to outline the potential benefits and risks associated with the systems in practice as far as possible.

  • A case study of case management in a complex rehabilitation pathway.
  • Two Complex Rehabilitation Case Managers worked across the NHS England South West hub with all stakeholders and service providers; including the three NHS England Supplier Managers, two major trauma centres (MTCs), ten acute hospital trusts, four specialist rehabilitation providers and 11 CCGs. They drilled down into the problems and developed an action plan to improve the patient flow across the complex rehabilitation pathway.
