- Sixty one studies of interventions involving mastectomy performed for the purpose of preventing breast cancer (n=15,077) were identified. The studies reported that bilateral risk reducing mastectomy reduces the incidence of breast cancer or the number of deaths or both, but many of the studies have methodological limitations. Evidence for contralateral risk-reducing mastectomy is inconclusive.
