- NELA is an ongoing national clinical audit of patients having emergency bowel surgery, the quality of care and outcomes for patients. The latest report found that improvements in the care of patients before, during and after emergency bowel surgeries have reduced patients’ average hospital stay from 19.2 days in 2013 to 16.6 days in 2016 and that the national 30-day mortality rate fell from 11.8 per cent to 10.6 per cent over three years.
