• The National Clinical Improvement Programme (NCIP) portal is a digital tool that NHS consultants in England will use to review their personal patient outcomes data alongside comparable national and unit level data.
• Metrics are being developed for the following surgical specialties: cardiothoracic surgery, ENT, general surgery, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, paediatric surgery, spinal surgery, urology and vascular surgery.

• The National Cardiac Audit Programme 2019 Annual Report covers over 300,000 records across five clinical areas: 
• Adult Cardiac Surgery

• The report focuses on three broad quality improvement themes: timely care, specialist care and evidence-based care delivered to a uniformly high standard.
• It highlights four areas of interest where improvements have been made but some hospitals have been slow to adopt innovation.

• Use of disease-modifying medicines in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction
• Deep wound infections after cardiac surgery requiring additional surgery

It provides the opportunity to assess and benchmark current systems to find opportunities for improvement.

• An Online tool has been created for viewing and downloading the data.
• An accompanying blog highlights seven key findings from the data.

• This report sets out baseline activity data from January to March 2017 for Stratified Follow Up and Recovery Package interventions which are part of the Living With and Beyond Cancer commitments in the National Cancer Strategy.
• Findings include:
• there are criteria/protocols for Stratified Follow Up available in 49% of trusts for breast cancer, 33% for colorectal cancer and 31% for prostate cancer.
• there was variable, but in some places, extensive use of different Recovery Package interventions in January to March 2017.

• The report focuses on the cranial neurosurgery service pathways and changes that will help avoid bottlenecks and free up hospital beds. It highlights how cranial neurosurgery providers could deliver a better service to patients by treating them more promptly and minimising cancellations and delays and identifies 15 recommendations to support a more productive cranial neurosurgery service.
• The report suggests that there are opportunities to improve patient experience and outcomes, and deliver cost efficiencies of up to £16.4m through smarter procurement, avoiding unnecessary admissions and using critical care only when clinically required.

• A new initiative from HQIP aimed at making it easier to access national clinical audit data.
• Key metrics either benchmarked against other providers or against national aspirational standards (based on NICE guidelines and recommendations from the national audit provider) to provide meaningful context to local performance information to help focus local quality improvement activity. 
• Currently include six audits:

• Data relating to patients diagnosed with lung cancer (including non-small-cell lung cancer, carcinoid and small-cell lung cancers) who underwent surgical operations during the period between 1 January and 31 December 2015. 
• The following outcomes are reported for surgeons and their hospitals:
• the number of operations carried out by all the specialist hospitals that provide surgery for lung cancer
• the names of the consultant surgeons and how many operations each surgeon completed
• the proportion of patients that survive at 30 days, 90 days and 1 year after their operation
• length of stay in hospital following an operation.
• resection rates by the multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) within the specialist hospitals.
